Soprano Renée Fleming Sings Praises of SieMatic Designer Susan Smart

Smart changes set of Fleming’s Upper West Side kitchen to include new appliances, more counter space, and a view of Manhattan

(Feasterville, PA, August 10, 2010) When acclaimed American soprano Renée Fleming was ready to take the kitchen design of her penthouse apartment on the Upper West Side of Manhattan up a note, she was confronted with one of her more difficult arrangements. So she contacted SieMatic kitchen designer Susan Smart who immediately went to work to solve the riddle all New York City area designers are challenged with – How does one transform the cramped, inefficient kitchen typical of Manhattan apartments into a spacious, utilitarian, yet aesthetically pleasing and comfortable, space?

Making the challenge more interesting was Fleming’s list of must haves that included more counter space, better fridge placement, a place to sit and enjoy the views out to the terrace, and a better layout in general. To create sorely needed extra space, Smart had to be innovative. She noticed a washer and dryer in the powder room off the kitchen and suggested moving them to an underused coat closet. This freed up the space she needed to go to work.

With room for additional counter space, Smart was now able to design a kitchen that would make use of the floor plan to the utmost degree, while creating a harmonic design flow and simultaneously fulfilling Fleming’s vision. She brought in lustrous stainless steel appliances, including a tall Sub-Zero refrigerator, wine refrigerator with beverage drawers, Miele oven, cook top, and range hood, which offered a more cohesive and open look. The cabinetry took center stage with a combination of SieMatic’s SC10 and SC20 collections. Custom cabinets in Titan walnut finish from the SC10 collection were teamed with Truffle Grey Gloss cabinetry from SieMatic’s SC20 collection for contrast in materials. The pairing gave the kitchen a sleek, streamlined appearance in addition to a more efficient layout. The completed project was a dramatic orchestration that earned Smart a standing ovation in the Fleming household.
